Eliza Dushku turned down an offer to star in a spin-off series for her Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997) character Faith, choosing to make Tru Calling instead.

After the first season finale, FOX came close to cancelling the series but did not, because ratings rose midway through the first season and its rival NBC's Friends (1994) was in its final season, so FOX decided to renew the show and give it another chance. After FOX renewed it for a second season, in the week the sixth episode was shot it cut the episode order from thirteen back to six. On the final day of filming, the cast and crew were told the series had been cancelled.

The series was cancelled by FOX, which thought the new show Point Pleasant (2005) would perform better after The O.C. than Tru Calling (2003). Point Pleasant was cancelled before completing its thirteen episodes.
