The series shares a similar plot with Hart of Dixie (2011), and one actor appears in both stories. In Hart of Dixie (2011), Tim Matheson's character is a doctor forced to share his medical practice with a new doctor in town whom he dislikes (Rachel Bilson); in this series, he must work with a medical professional in town whom he also dislikes (the Dixie doctor was a doctor and the VR one is a nurse practitioner) (Alexandra Breckenridge).

Virgin River is not actually a town in California. According to Wikipedia, the Virgin River is a tributary of the Colorado River located in the US states of Utah, Nevada and Arizona. The river is about 162 miles (261 km) long.[2] In 2009, during the centennial celebrations of Zion National Park, it was designated Utah's first wild and scenic river.

Tim Matheson, who plays Dr Vernon Mullins, once played college student Eric Stratton, the antagonist of Dr. Dean Vernon Wormer, played by the late John Vernon in National Lampoon's Animal House (1978). The funny coincidence that Matheson's character's first name is Vernon is most likely not a coincidence, but a nod to the great raunchy college film of the '70s.
