In the Sherlock Holmes novels, Holmes fell into the Reichenbach Falls in Switzerland as a result of his deadly struggle with Moriarty. Arthur Conan Doyle killed off the character out of boredom, and the public's love for Holmes, and its lack of interest in his other works, made him feel that the character overshadowed his writing career. For more information, see Lucy Worsley's Holmes vs. Doyle (2023).

The twins Dr. Stephens Croft and Dr. Adam Croft were not cast separately; both are played by Peter Mark Kendall.

Watson's choice of the specific staff in his episode, namely the twins and the Asian adoptee, is part of a scientific experiment: the "Nature vs. Nurture" debate, specifically whether a person's fate is determined by genetics or environment.

CRISPR stands for Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats, naturally repeating sections of DNA in bacteria and archaea (the earliest ancestors of bacteria) that form a bacterial immune system for fighting viruses. These are short, repeating DNA sequences interspersed with "spacer" DNA, where fragments of viral DNA are captured and the repeats serve as "bookends" marking the start and end of the sequence, acting as a genetic memory for future encounters. CRISPR is a gene-editing technology that allows scientists to precisely cut, insert or remove DNA sequences, acting like molecular "scissors" to correct genetic errors, develop new treatments for diseases such as sickle cell, engineer more resilient crops and even fight viruses. The CRISPR system consists of guide RNA made from this "spacer" DNA sequence and the Cas-9 protein; together they form a complex that can split or cut DNA and allow gene editing. The guide RNA directs the aforementioned protein to a specific target sequence in DNA, the blueprint of all life, and Cas-9 is the site, or cutting board, where the editing takes place.

This is not the first time Morris Chestnut has played a medical professional: he was a forensic pathologist and the title hero of Rosewood (2015), a brain surgeon in The Resident (2018) and in Nurse Jackie (2009).

Joseph Bell, a character in this episode, Buying Time (2025), was also the Doctor's name and was the mentor and inspiration for the Sherlock Holmes series written by Arthur Conan Doyle. One of Doctor Bell's abilities was that he could determine a person's illness, nationality and occupation at a single glance without needing any other information. For more information, see Lucy Worsley's Holmes vs. Doyle (2023).

Robert Carlyle, who plays Sherlock Holmes in season 2, appeared in Trainspotting (1996) alongside Jonny Lee Miller, who played Holmes in Elementary (2012). Miller's grandfather Bernard Lee appeared as "M," Bond's MI6 boss, in the first 11 James Bond films, while Carlyle played Bond's villain Renard in The World Is Not Enough (1999).

Watson's cancellation is sad. I initially started watching only because I saw an ad with an old roommate of mine (Eve Harlow, who plays Dr. Ingrid Derian), but in the end I quite liked the series and watched and enjoyed every episode.
