Are Nolan's Films Just a Swamp?
Translated from the Turkish original: Nolan'ın Filmleri Bir Bataklıktan mı İbaret?.
Besides Christopher Nolan's films Inception, Memento, Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, Insomnia, Interstellar, I also watched his first feature-length film, The Following.
What I'm going to say is this: Nolan doesn't know what art is. Art is the transmission of emotions in the most aesthetic, artistic and beautiful way possible.
Yet Nolan has developed a mathematics instead of art. By applying his mathematics to every film, he can do no more than pull the wool over people's eyes.
Art is not like science. It doesn't operate according to certain physical and scientific laws. Sometimes a scene you designed for weeks turns out badly, sometimes a scene you gave 2 hours to reflects art.
Nolan was never a director. He advanced his shooting techniques just as if he were solving a mathematical problem.
The six films I've watched and The Following are just nice films. Films that contain no emotion, no artistic aestheticism.
Why don't I say these things about Kubrick, Tarkovsky, Sergio Leone, Kieslowski, but about Nolan? Nolan is like a numbers guy who successfully performs a mathematical operation. The others are people who carry cinema to better places, who produce art, who produce works.
Inarritu is a director whose films contain plenty of existentialism.
Nolan is not a director. It is my wish that one day you understand this.
