The Dark Knight: Is Christopher Nolan's Cinema an Illusion?
Translated from the Turkish original: The Dark Knight: Christopher Nolan'ın Sineması Bir İllüzyon mu?.
I watched Christopher Nolan's Batman Begins and then The Dark Knight. I didn't watch the last film of the trilogy. It's not the only reason, but one of the reasons is taking just one character (Bane) from the Batman universe and building a script and editing around him, and shooting it.
In 2013 I played the game Batman: Arkham City. This was the second game. Then I played the first game. The first game was also good, but in the second game they added such things on top of the first game that I almost wasn't going to like the first game. The second game, Batman: Arkham City, was a game in which most of the characters in the Batman world appeared. A huge city, you're flying in the air, below the prisoners are talking to themselves. You stop and listen to them. Everything was very good. And still, that game is the best game I've played to this day.
I want to say this. Nolan's first Batman film was better than the second film. The second Batman film had nothing to do with the real Batman world. The one and only beautiful thing in the second film was that the actor playing the Joker gave a wonderful performance. Apart from that, the world had become a game drawn by one man (Nolan) in his own fantasy world.
If Nolan played the game Batman: Arkham City, he would accept that what he did was completely wrong. Because The Dark Knight was a film put forward from a completely subjective and individual perspective, with almost no relation to the Batman world.
For example, in the game, at the place where Bruce Wayne's mother and father were killed, we place a flower on the ground, we take a position of respect, a song plays, from behind. Even just that scene alone is of higher quality than the entirety of The Dark Knight.
Apart from that, the film surpassing 12 Angry Men on IMDb is unbelievable. In today's world everything is losing its quality and some people do nothing about it. Man finished art with his own hands. The thing that will finish art is not artificial intelligence. Artificial intelligence has no emotions. A director who makes a film sprinkles his emotions, thoughts and consciousness into the film. Artificial intelligence cannot do this. It produces something robotic. For example, in Turkish music, keko rap is everywhere. A song with a bad melody, going "Vay vay vay, my dear sister Demet, welcome, sit down like this, sing to us too, you're cool, sis," was listened to by millions of people, the song became popular.
I understand people giving The Dark Knight a 10 out of 10 and a 9, because Nolan does his work like a magician. If his tactics were exposed, no one would trust him, but Christopher Nolan can put the masses to sleep. And he does this by "making the audience feel smart." For example, Inception never came to me as a multidimensional film in time. I watched it as a nice film, a little above average. Memento is a film that goes from front to back, well planned but producing nothing new.
When you look at things from somewhat different perspectives, when you look for meaning, when you go down to the root, you can see that Nolan's The Dark Knight is a fiasco. I don't want to do this to you in a high-handed way. The director with the most films on IMDb is Nolan, with 8 films. But none of them deserve to be there. None of them truly add a different angle to cinema. Kubrick contributed to cinema. Sergio Leone contributed to cinema. Kieslowski contributed to cinema. As someone who is well-versed in the world of cinema and directors, Nolan is an overrated director who stuffs one main idea in his head into every film and believes his food will be good just because he uses dozens of different sauces, compared to the attention he receives.
As for The Dark Knight, it may be the kind of film that those who haven't met the real Batman universe can like, but that too only until people understand some of Nolan's cinematic techniques and tactics.
