Breaking Bad - The Injustice Done to Skyler
I very often come across people who make negative comments about the character Skyler White. I see her being cursed at and insulted in slang. The majority are those who say she did wrong things. There is even a perception as if Walter White could have reached far higher peaks and the biggest character standing in the way of that was his wife Skyler White.
Skyler White's two mistakes, which I also acknowledge:
1) Cheating on her husband Walter and sleeping with Ted.
2) Giving money to Ted.
However, apart from these two, from the 1st episode of the 1st season to the final episode of the 5th season, Skyler White did almost exactly what an average American woman would do. Her dilemmas and her fears. Because Walter in the 5th season was very different from the man in the 1st season, 1st episode. He was dangerous. Even though everyone knows that Walter would never harm his own family, that's not how things work in real life. There is a man across from her who is a worldwide drug manufacturer, who has earned sacks and sacks of money, who has killed people, had people killed, who has directly or indirectly caused deaths. Maybe Walter White was right at times. But Skyler White was not his opposite.
Actually, in the first season the series depicts a standard American world. After that, things start to get thinner. Walter White was so far from harming his family that, after taking the baby and leaving, even though he knew the phone was tapped, he went and said "I did everything, it's my fault, I'm responsible, you stupid woman," which meant Skyler was cleared of all these crimes. And Skyler made that clear enough in her facial expression, her tone of voice and her stammering during the phone call.
Walter White had been left so alone for years and had seen that his own idea was worth millions of dollars, and he had accumulated this inside himself so much that in one of the last episodes he says to the man, "Bring the newspaper every day, stay another 30 minutes, I'll pay you more." That newspaper reports on how much value the company of those who got rich off his own idea has gained.
In my view Walter White has crimes at times. In fact, saying "at times" is an understatement; in most places he does wrong things. But Skyler does almost exactly what a woman could do in real life. The same reactions, the same responses, everything like a real woman. Here I congratulate the writing team, not only because they handled Skyler White very consistently over the six years the series was shot, but because they drew all the characters linearly, as if going from point A to point B. By linearly I mean step by step, slowly, gradually. Otherwise the complex characters and events are extremely complex and tangled.
In the end, those who find Skyler White unjustified and who insult and curse her mostly see her as the stopper of Walter, or of Heisenberg. Yet the matter is absolutely not that simple.
