Soma - Human Consciousness and the Source of Existential Suffering
This analysis is aboutSoma (2015)Soma is a psychological, existential horror game released in 2015. It wouldn't be wrong to say that it is, most generally and first of all, a horror game. However, this does not go beyond a superficial view. Soma is, in my opinion, the game that makes the greatest intellectual contribution, one that even people who have never played a video game in their lives should play. Because it deals with a subject like consciousness, which even neuroscience has still not been able to solve and which has not been much explored in the art world either.
Consciousness is the source of our suffering, our fears, our worries, our anxieties. All awareness comes with consciousness. Consciousness is right next to existential suffering as well. A higher consciousness means more personal suffering. In the world of literature, the subject of consciousness appears invisibly in Dostoevsky's books. You especially need to read Notes from Underground carefully. There are a few words, a few artistic works about consciousness.
I have played better games than Soma. I have played Batman: Arkham City, a game that is hard to do better than. While my score for Batman: Arkham City is 9.7 out of 10, my score for Soma is 8.4 out of 10. But Soma is a game everyone should play.
If you've watched Black Mirror, you've also seen, in the White Christmas episode, them trapping a human consciousness in a small box and what they do to it.
Then, in the Black Museum episode, which I see as stolen from that episode, they trap a man inside something like a little toy and give him endless electric shocks, to consciousness.
Soma deals with the subject of consciousness. It is the only game I can recommend to everyone to raise your level of awareness, not because it is very good, but because you can learn something from it, because you can gain different perspectives.
