Production of Fallout 4 began right after The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (2011). Bethesda stated that they will begin production of Fallout 5 after production of The Elder Scrolls VI is completed. The Elder Scrolls VI premieres in winter 2026, and Fallout 5 is not expected to be released until at least 2030. In an interview, producer Todd Howard said a rough draft of the Fallout 5 script had already been written. He shared certain parts of it with the creators and head writers of the Fallout (2024) series to give an idea of what the game's story would be about, so that they would not go in a similar direction, since they wanted the series' characters and story to be original and not directly connected to any existing or future game.

While wandering in the Quincy area, a refrigerator can be found containing a ghoul child trapped inside since the bombs fell. This may be a reference to the scene in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008) in which Jones survives an atomic bomb test explosion by hiding in a lead-lined refrigerator at ground zero (which is a myth; refrigerators were not lead-lined, not counting the paint). This is not the first time the Fallout series has poked fun at this idea. In Fallout: New Vegas (2010), if the player chooses the Wild Wasteland trait, a skeleton wearing a fedora can be found inside a refrigerator with no door.

At the time of its retirement, the Nordstjernen was the longest-serving ship in the Hurtigruten coastal service and was preserved in Norway as national heritage.

Fallout 4 was (at the time) the only game in the Fallout series that let you build your own base/shelter. Fallout 76 (2018) expands on the core building mechanic introduced in this game; players are equipped with a Construction and Assembly Mobile Platform (C.A.M.P.). This allows players to create mobile bases called CAMPs; the items that can be built are essentially the same as in this game, and the player's level limits how many items can be built. CAMPs exist in the open world and can be visited and attacked by both players and NPCs. Initially players could only have one CAMP; the Fallout 76: Wastelanders (2020) DLC allowed players to create two CAMPs, but only one can be placed in the world at a time. The Fallout 76: Steel Dawn (2020) DLC added the ability to build a fallout shelter at a CAMP; these shelters are instanced and can be visited by other players, but NPCs cannot enter or appear inside. Shelters can have a variety of different appearances; some resemble a series of caves, while others look like a small vault.
