The game serves as a tribute to Stan Lee, Spider-Man's co-creator, who died in November 2018, and to Chadwick Boseman, the actor who played T'Challa/Black Panther in the Marvel Cinematic Universe until his death in August 2020. A statue of Lee stands next to the restaurant where he made a cameo appearance in the previous game, while 42nd Street has been renamed "Boseman Way." The game is also dedicated to Boseman's memory.
