Max Payne 3 was originally scheduled for release in late 2009, but its launch was pushed back to 2010 so that it could benefit from more development time, alongside several other Take-Two Interactive franchises.

Max Payne 3 was delayed again in June 2010, this time to 2011, and by December 21 it had disappeared from the 2011–2012 calendar year and was pushed back once more.
