In an interview on National Public Radio's program "Weekend Edition Sunday," Ali Wong said that one way she set this film apart from other, more traditional romantic comedies was by removing the traditional "makeover" subplot for the female lead: "What people notice is that she wears her glasses the whole time, which is extremely rare in a romantic comedy. Marcus's band is named Hello Peril, a pun on and comic reappropriation of "Yellow Peril," a term dating from the late 1800s that describes xenophobic bigotry by white people against Asians as well as the racist propaganda produced to stoke such fears in white people. In the United States, fear of Asian immigrants was codified in racist laws such as the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882, a federal law that banned the immigration of all Chinese laborers. In a June 2019 interview with Pitchfork, Randall Park acknowledged that the band's name was a play on that idea: "I wanted the band to be an Asian-American band, and the name is basically a version of the historical term 'yellow peril,' which is the West's fear of the Far East taking over. The concept of yellow peril has repeated itself throughout history, and it just seemed like a name Marcus would give the band because he's a community guy and he knows his history. Ali and I both had Asian-American studies backgrounds, but we didn't sit down and say, 'Let's give the band a name in the style of Asian-American studies.' It naturally made its way into the story."
