Some scenes in Below were shot aboard a real Second World War submarine. The USS Silversides, located in Muskegon, Michigan (and open for tours), was towed into the middle of Lake Michigan for scenes with Bruce Greenwood. Minor repainting (rust color) was done on the Silversides, but it has since been returned to its original gray. The rest of the sets and models used in the film were based on the Silversides' appearance and layout.

At around the 29-minute mark, the book Claire picks up is a collection of William Shakespeare's writings, open to the pages of Macbeth, which features a vengeful ghost haunting his killer.

Darren Aronofsky, one of the screenplay's co-writers, was originally set to direct the film in 1999, but instead made Requiem for a Dream (2000).
