   The title "Winter Soldier" is assumed to refer to Bucky's nickname or to how he is kept in cold-based suspended animation between missions during the Cold War. In the commentary, however, it is said to actually refer to an eighteenth-century quote from Thomas Paine: "THESE are the times that try men's souls. The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of their country; but he that stands by it now, deserves the love and thanks of man and woman." Therefore, thematically, the "winter soldier" is the Captain, not Bucky.

   When Steve hides the flash drive in the vending machine, he hides it behind Hubba Bubba bubble gum. "Hubba Hubba" was used by some military personnel during World War II to express approval. It was a slang term used in the 1940s to refer to a woman. When Agent Romanoff appears behind Steve as he searches for the flash drive, she is most likely blowing a bubble with the gum.
