According to Johnny Depp in Turner Classic Movies' documentary about Marlon Brando, he and Brando were sitting at a table talking about the inconsistencies in DeMarco's character and DeMarco admitting his father was a New Yorker, and Depp's lines were rewritten just before the scene was shot, so he had no time to prepare and memorize them. Brando spoke with the director and the cinematographer to find out where the camera angles were. He then found a way to cut Depp's lines out of the script and stick them onto the coffee cup in his hand, then held the cup so that the camera could not perceive the pasted lines and Depp could read them.

Mike Judge heard a rumor that Marlon Brando and Johnny Depp were fans of the animated series Beavis and Butt-Head (1993). At one point, while the cameras were not running, Brando and Depp sat on a couch doing impressions of the animated duo. It is believed that Brando did Butt-Head and Depp did Beavis. At one point Depp personally asked Judge whether he could play Beavis if a live-action film were made.
