The lighthouse seen in the film and on the poster is the Point Arena Lighthouse near Manchester, California. The house in the film was a shell built by the production crew and was demolished after filming. The only permanent structures near the lighthouse are some vacation rentals that were formerly Coast Guard barracks and the Lighthouse Keeper's residence, now a museum maintained by local volunteers. The lighthouse recently underwent renovation and is open to the public.

The phone number Daniel leaves on the answering machine while calling to find his friend is 555-2368. This is the same number used in the television commercials for Ghostbusters (1984). It was also the number used in When a Stranger Calls (1979), in which Carol Kane's character Jill Johnson gives Police Sergeant Saggert the phone number of the house where she is babysitting. The number above, 555-2368, was the one she gave while speaking to the Sergeant on the phone.
