   In a February 2018 oral history of the film's production in New York Magazine, Jada Yuan and Hunter Harris reported that Marcus Henderson (groundskeeper Walter/Roman Armitage) revealed that many of the actions he performed were deliberately "absurd by nature": "Who tries to clean an entire estate? That's crazy! Who tries to use just one of those old-fashioned push reel mowers?… You automatically assumed he was a gardener because he was doing gardening, but when we looked at him in detail it didn't make any sense." Jordan Peele said he inserted this detail as a "hidden reference" to hint at the fact that "Walter" is not actually a gardener or someone used to any kind of manual labor, because his consciousness is really that of Roman Armitage.

The signs read "GET OUT" and were aimed at African Americans, advising them to leave town before sundown in areas that practiced a form of discrimination through a combination of discriminatory local laws, intimidation and violence, excluding people of non-white races from all-white municipalities or neighborhoods in the US known as "sundown towns."
