Gene Hackman said in several interviews that he found making the film difficult and somewhat uncomfortable, because he was much older than everyone else. For that reason he kept much of it to himself, and ultimately managed to make use of the feeling of being outside the group when playing the character.

The film was initially scheduled for release in June 2001. However, Paramount had already planned the premiere of The Score (2001) for July. Since both films shared a similar premise, Warner Bros. rescheduled the film for a later premiere date to avoid competition. Coincidentally, the film's premiere took place in November 2001, the same month The Score (2001) was released on DVD.
