In a 2023 interview with Collider, del Toro explained that he lost the chance to direct this film because of studio oversight. He was going to work on it alongside The Shape of Water in Toronto, but the studio missed the 17:00 window to book the sound stages they needed in the city. We had to shoot Pacific Rim 2 somewhere else, and del Toro, because of his commitment to The Shape of Water, could not follow the film.

In a 2022 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Charlie Day said that, like many fans of the first film, he was not happy that his character became the film's villain, but he agreed to it primarily out of his admiration for producer Guillermo del Toro and the possibility of returning for further sequels, especially if del Toro returned as director.

Foreshadowing: at one point Cadet Suresh states how he wants to be honored when he dies, and the other students joke about how many Jaegers will be at his funeral. Ironically, his Jaeger, Guardian Bravo, is the only Jaeger that is not completely destroyed or torn apart during the battle.

Although Guillermo del Toro is a well-known producer, he did not watch this film: "It's like watching your ex-wife's home movies. If they're good it's awful, if they're bad or the other way around it's awful. You don't want to know. So I didn't watch it. I read the last script and it was very different. Some elements were the same but it was very different."

Despite being heavily promoted in the trailers, Obsidian Fury appears in only two scenes. It kills Mako in Sydney and fights Gipsy Avenger, forcing the other Jaegers to retreat as they are about to be deployed, and it fights Gipsy Avenger again in Siberia, where it destroys an old Jaeger factory and tears out its power core.

The giant Kaiju made up of several smaller Kaiju resembles Slattern, the largest Category 5 Kaiju in Pacific Rim (2013). They used their tails to damage the Jaegers. While Slattern uses its tail to strike Striker Eureka's chest and to stab Gipsy Danger's back, the giant Kaiju used its tail to tear off Sabre Athena's leg and throw it into a building. The Kaiju also used their surroundings to damage the Jaegers. While Slattern pushes Striker Eureka toward giant ocean rocks, the giant Kaiju pushed Guardian Bravo onto several skyscrapers.

These qualities are frequently shown or referenced throughout the film.

The rank worn by John Boyega (Pentecost) reads as "General Lieutenant," which of course does not exist in the US military ranking system. A lieutenant general is in fact a rank denoted by three stars. The rank on the shoulder epaulettes is read from the inside outward (that is, from the neck outward).
