  2. #021

Christopher Nolan deliberately obscured combat in Batman Begins to show Batman from the criminals' point of view, and the improved Batsuit design in The Dark Knight let him display more of Christian Bale's Keysi-fighting method training.

  3. #037

Christopher Nolan selected Chicago as a filming location for The Dark Knight because he liked the area and felt its architecture was interesting without being as recognizable as that of better-known cities such as New York City.

  4. #038

Heath Ledger improvised the moment when the Joker begins sarcastically applauding in his prison cell as Gordon is promoted. The applause was not in the script, but Sir Christopher Nolan immediately encouraged the crew to keep filming, and the scene was included in the final cut.

  5. #046

Heath Ledger's vocal coach on this film, Gerry Grennell, stated in the documentary I Am Heath Ledger (2017) that Heath constantly had to lick his lips because he was worried the prosthetics would stick together. He eventually turned this into a tic of the character during filming.

Although this film is dedicated to Heath Ledger, it is also dedicated to stuntman Conway Wickliffe, who died when the car he was a passenger in crashed.

  7. #050

Writer, producer and director Sir Christopher Nolan thought Two-Face's disfigurement should be created through computer graphics rather than prosthetic makeup; he felt that no matter how good the makeup was, when Two-Face's appearance required part of his face to be burned, the makeup would still inherently add something to the actor's face.

While filming in Chicago, the neighboring production was Wanted (2008), and Morgan Freeman worked on both films simultaneously. At one point Wanted comic book writer Mark Millar visited the set, but without permission. Security and Lauren Shuler Donner (who was also visiting the set at the time) caught Millar sitting on the Batpod. Millar was removed from the set.

The famous pencil scene was shot in 22 takes over 2 days. Nolan decided to stage the stunt for real after the stuntman slid the pencil at the last minute, and apparently had "three knockouts" while shooting the scene.

  11. #126

Sir Christopher Nolan said that on Blu-ray he had to add a "very small visual-effects component" to the scene in which Gotham General Hospital is blown up, which he had planned to shoot in IMAX without any visual effects. Between the time they made the deal to demolish the building and the time they began filming, someone broke in and stole all the windows and all the metal frames on the top two floors. Visual effects supervisor Nick Davis and his team managed very skillfully to insert some window reflections and match the actual row of windows the building still had.

  12. #131

The ferry scene was shot in a single day and used 800 extras. So many extras were on the boats that the production had to use a precise schedule to make sure everyone got into costume on time.

  13. #160

The Joker's reference to Rachel Dawes as "Harvey's little bunny" was not written in the script and was instead improvised by Heath Ledger.

  14. #167

At special screenings, Christopher Nolan showed audiences the filmmaking process with behind-the-scenes footage, including the logistics of the Bat-pod. He notes that the original plan was to tuck Batman's cape into his suit like a backpack, but during filming he noticed that the cape immediately caught the flow of the wind and never got caught in the rear wheel, and he was very pleased to learn this.

  15. #176

Prosthetic makeup supervisor Colin Sullivan created three different sculptures for the Joker's scars. Using a technique he learned on The Last Samurai (2003), he made a silicone mold that combined the three looks.
