Anjelica Huston competed with Cher for film roles. Huston auditioned for the role of Alexandra Medford in The Witches of Eastwick (1987), but Cher won the part, and Huston was later cast instead of Cher as the Grand High Witch in The Witches (1990) and as Morticia Addams in The Addams Family (1991).

At the end of her 17-year relationship with Jack Nicholson, Nicholson gave her a pearl and diamond bracelet that had once been a gift from Frank Sinatra to Ava Gardner; this was how Nicholson ended his relationships. She survived a nearly fatal car accident. Driving down Coldwater Canyon at dusk, a BMW came toward her too fast and hit the bumper of the car in front of her. Huston's face struck the windshield and she was admitted to Cedars-Sinai, where she underwent a long operation to remove bone fragments from her forehead and skull and to reconstruct her nose. When she woke up, Jack Nicholson was there with flowers. In an interview, Huston shared that the accident changed her life.
