Christina Applegate said the script for Legally Blonde (2001) initially came to mind, but she was hesitant about taking on another "dumb blonde" role so soon after finishing Married... with Children (1987). The part ultimately went to Reese Witherspoon, who was nominated for a Golden Globe for playing Elle Woods. Applegate said she was happy with how things turned out and that Witherspoon did a far better job than she could have done.
