In his commentary on the Catch-22 (1970) DVD, director Mike Nichols recalled seeing Huston on a payphone one day while shooting street scenes at Studi di Cinecittà in Rome. Huston was there to direct The Kremlin Letter (1970), widely regarded as the low point of his directing career. Nichols says that while the red light was on in the scene where "Kremlin" was being shot, Huston was on the phone placing bets with his bookmaker in the US.
