Michael Caine's mother, Ellen Maria Burchell, regularly visited a 'cousin' who had been confined to a mental hospital for more than forty years. When his mother died in 1989, Caine learned that this cousin was in fact his older half-brother, David. David was epileptic and had spent most of his life in the hospital. This revelation fundamentally changed what Caine knew about his family and affected him deeply.
