For The Fifth Element (1997), the production decided to dye Jovovich's hair from its natural brown to the orange that became her character's signature. Because the bright color had to be redyed regularly to be maintained, Milla's hair was damaged and broke so quickly that it could not withstand the dye. Most of Milla's hair fell out, and a wig matching the color and style of Leeloo's hair was eventually created and used for the rest of the production.
