In a 2023 interview with Awards Daily, John Hillcoat discussed the series' visual storytelling strategy: "… with the lighting, we started the whole journey with them, it was completely warm, natural light. It was exterior or interior, but the audience was literally blended in, almost a reflection of themselves on the stage. There was a real intimacy between the viewers and the artists. Over time, as their success grew and the pressures in their lives grew, that separation formed and the audience was pushed further away. We tried. To show that visually, we tried to spend more moments in the studio just between the two of them. When we went live, we kept the audience at a distance. That was when Tammy Wynette was at her lowest, and then we tried to shoot 'Help Me Make It Through the Night' at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville in a similar way, but in this case George was watching her. And the colors were critical. We got such a deep, crazy blue light that, 'Oh, just film their performances. But actually that blue light was also about the performance, the character and what they were going through emotionally.' At the same time we were trying to reinforce the traps of fame and success and the illusion of fame, power and success."
