The first season is primarily set in Storyville, a historic red-light district of New Orleans that operated openly between 1897 and 1917. Most of the buildings from that era were leveled and demolished during the Great Depression, and only a few structures survived. As a result, most of the sets featured in certain scenes had to be built from scratch. Storyville was also known as the birthplace of New Orleans jazz and is associated with famous musicians Louis Armstrong, Ferdinand 'Jelly Roll' Morton and Buddy Bolden.

In an interview, Bogosian said he was genuinely surprised that Field dedicated himself to studying his (Bogosian's) mannerisms, which made it more believable that (Field's) Daniel would grow up to become Bogosian's Daniel.

In the sixth episode of the first season, "Like Angels Put in Hell by God," Lestat, who has rekindled his relationship with Louis after their six-year separation, tries to win Claudia over and bond with her. But it was to no avail. This is because of Claudia's past traumas, mostly stemming from Lestat's mistreatment of her, and the fact that she has mentally become an adult. The first reason causes her to feel antipathy toward him. Except for the times she has to talk to him or spend time with him, she spends most of the episode ignoring him. His separation from Lestat begins to bother him. This leads her to complain about it to Louis in the interstitial scene where they are preparing to sleep in their coffins and Louis tries to soothe her in Claudia's room, calling on her to give him (Lestat) a chance as he prepares to sleep. Toward the end of the episode, Claudia decides to leave again on her own, though she wants Louis to come with her, because she does not want to stay by Lestat's side too long and does not want to come between him and Louis. However, when Lestat finds her on the train, he forces Claudia to stay with a death threat as a way of controlling her and Louis. One scene later, Claudia, forced to spend time with him, wins a game of chess against Lestat and triumphantly leaves the room to sleep, ignoring his angry outbursts toward her. At the same time, she telepathically informs Louis that she plans to kill Lestat because he (Lestat) will not let her go so she can continue her life. A similar situation occurs in the novel. Louis recounts an incident in which Lestat becomes angry over Claudia ignoring him (Lestat). Because of his (Lestat's) oppressive attitude, she mostly stopped talking to him. Lestat threatened to slap her, and Louis had to intervene to defuse the situation. In both cases, this shows that Lestat, despite being her maker and father figure, is especially angered by Claudia ignoring him, and that this makes him feel very insecure.

Deeper Meaning (1)

  1. #022

At the start of the series, Louis invites Daniel to a second interview. This is an inversion of the vampire mythology in which a vampire needs an invitation to enter a human's home or life. A human can invite a vampire directly or indirectly, through things like an invitation to interact or a summons. In this case, it is the vampire who invites a human to another interview.

In the novel, Louis had a mother and a sister, in addition to his brother Paul, who lived with him on their plantation and whom he eventually sent to live in New Orleans some time after he was turned into a vampire. However, they were never given names. Their names in the series are Florence and Grace, respectively.

At one point in the "I Want You More Than Anything in the World" interview in the fourth episode of the second season, Daniel asks Louis whether he is schizophrenic, and Louis denies it. This moment is played somewhat comically because of the way Daniel asks the question and how Louis answers while smirking. The question arose because Louis states during the interview that he has harbored fantasies about Lestat, or what he and fans call "Dreamstat," and spoken with him ever since he and Claudia came to Europe during the Second World War. After developing a relationship with Armand, it was not until Louis decided to mentally let Lestat/"Dreamstat" go in the same episode. In the seventh episode of the second season, "I Could Not Prevent It," while discussing Lestat's role in the trial during the interview, Louis briefly imagined at one point that Lestat was sitting in the living room in the clothes he wore at the trial. However, despite his assurance about his mental state, some fans think Louis may be schizophrenic or have a condition similar to the mental disorder of his brother Paul. This is because of his behavior in the fifth episode of the second season, "Don't Be Afraid, Just Start the Tape." In the intense argument scene between Louis and Armand in the fifth episode, Louis's behavior and mannerisms resemble Paul's. After the first interview went badly, he attacked young Daniel and, before Armand briefly stopped him, after drinking some of Daniel's drug-laced blood, he began behaving and speaking frantically and strangely. During the argument, Louis reveals his frustrations and tells Armand that he is boring. In contrast, Armand scolds him for being irresponsible by openly telling a human about his vampirism and cruelly tells him that Claudia never loved him the way he and Armand loved him. At these words, Louis is overcome with grief and lets his guilt toward her take hold of him. He then claims he can "hear" Claudia. Within the few seconds that follow, and before Louis flees the room to attempt suicide out of great pain and guilt, nothing but the sound of birds is heard. In the pilot episode, "In Throes of Increasing Wonder...," Paul claimed he "heard" birds and that the birds communicated with him. Moreover, in the second season's eighth episode, "And That's the End of It. There's Nothing Else," after Louis is released from exile in the rock-filled coffin prison by Armand and while planning his revenge on Armand's coven for Claudia's death, he behaved similarly to how he did in the fifth episode. After his release, he experienced a severe blood hunger and eventually attacked and feasted on the blood of everyone he encountered. While Louis formed his plan for how to eliminate each member of Armand's coven, he imagined that one of his victims was speaking to him, and meanwhile he was behaving and speaking frantically. This may have been the first time he behaved this way since before the events following the first interview in San Francisco. Schizophrenia is widely believed to be hereditary. Although there is no single gene responsible for the disorder, there have been studies showing that some people within a family have the disorder. In addition, non-genetic factors such as nutrition and environment also play a role in the disorder.
