The character name Caine is a biblical reference to Cain in Genesis, who killed Abel during a fight and was afterward forced to wander the world. The Mark of Cain is a protection warning anyone who sees him not to kill him. For Kwai Chang Caine, this could be the wanted posters by which people know he is sought for murder. Most likely the Mark of Cain is reflected in the brands on his arms, the monk's protective form of his training.
