Alan Ritchson said he thought that playing Jack Reacher, a man of few words, would be a cinch in terms of dialogue. That was until he had a scene describing a case in great detail, where he had to spew out four pages of monologue in 30 seconds. That required some extra study at night.

Reacher sometimes identifies himself to civilians as "Major Jack Reacher, United States Army Military Police." In reality he isn't an MP, but rather a special agent with the United States Army Criminal Investigation Division (CID), although since the average person doesn't know what Army CID means it's common for CID agents to identify themselves as military police for expediency. The difference between the Army's Military Police Corps and CID is analogous to the difference between civilian uniformed police officers and detectives. Army MP's are responsible for base security, force protection, mounted & foot patrols, providing backup and support to CID agents and operations, enforcing base regulations and traffic laws, the laws of the United States and regulations of the Department of Defense and Department of the Army. Army MP's report to the Provost Marshal of the base they are stationed at, there are also Army Military Police Criminal Investigators (MPI), who are base detectives that investigate misdemeanors and minor felonies like assault, breaking and entering, larceny and robbery; MPI's ultimately report to the United States Army Provost Marshal, who is a Brigadier General. CID agents on the other hand investigate major felonies and serious violations of the Uniform Code of Military Justice, essentially anything that could result in a court-martial and dishonorable discharge. Unlike Army MP's and MPI's, Army CID agents can be either civilians or military enlisted personnel with a minimum rank of corporal (E-4), warrant officers or commissioned officers. Army CID agents report to the CID Director, historically CID's commanding officer was a major general and deputy commanding officer a brigadier general; however in 2021 CID leadership was restructured with CID being led by a civilian director and deputy director, and a brigadier general acting as a from of assistant director. Both civilian and military CID agents are part of the Army's chain-of-command and report to the Director of CID, who reports directly to the Under Secretary of the Army.

Lee Child, the British author of the bestselling books, says his readers never fully accepted Tom Cruise as Jack Reacher, not because of his acting but because his physique did not match the enormous man in the novels at all. Child particularly stressed his respect for Cruise as an actor and how much he enjoyed their friendship and collaboration throughout the making of both Reacher films. Furthermore, because he anticipated that the Jack Reacher novels would become an episodic television series, and Cruise was never keen to appear in such a series, Child hoped that a relatively unknown actor would take the lead role.

Reacher's first season (2022) was based on Lee Child's debut novel, 1997's *Killing Floor*, and premiered on 4 February 2022. The second season, adapted from *Bad Luck and Trouble* (2007), began on 15 December 2023 and ended on 19 January 2024. The third season, adapted from the 2003 novel *Persuader*, reached audiences on 20 February 2025. In October 2024, before the third season premiered, the series was renewed for a fourth season.

Remarkably for a production of this size and scale, showrunner Nick Santora never met lead actor Alan Ritchson or Reacher book series author Lee Child face to face. He conducted the entire process for the series, including design, scriptwriting and casting, over Zoom from beginning to end. He still had not met them in person by the time the first season was released on Amazon Prime.

Multiple times in the series, Reacher declares himself to be a hobo rather than a vagrant; the comment is made once in the book, but without any explanation. While both terms generally reflect the idea of being a homeless wanderer and are often used interchangeably, there are some differences between the terms that the pedantic Reacher would feel to be important. Historically, a hobo sought to work wherever they traveled, where a vagrant would beg or steal for their sustenance. A hobo generally tried to show respect to their host community, as embodied in what was once an actual code of ethics. Vagrancy has been associated with a number of crimes and social ills; U.S. vagrancy laws were frequently enacted to try to combat public drunkenness, prostitution, petty theft, and other problems attributed to the transient population. Reacher views himself as someone who helps the communities he visits, rather than being a nuisance.

In the novels, Frances held the rank of First Sergeant before she retired from the U.S. Army to work as a private investigator. In the TV series, Neagley (portrayed by Danish actress Maria Sten) was ranked at Master Sergeant before retiring from the Army. Both ranks are the same pay grade (E-8), with the rank of First Sergeant holding more authority and responsibilities than a master sergeant. Additionally, Neagley is white in the book while being African-American in the TV series.

A temporary townscape was built in North Pickering, Ontario, to support filming of the first season. The fictional town of Margrave was built entirely from scratch on rented farmland in Ontario. Other filming locations included Toronto, Port Perry and Pickering. Principal photography for Season 1 took place in Toronto from 15 April to 30 July 2021. During filming, Alan Ritchson suffered a broken bone in his shoulder that required surgery and tore an abdominal muscle in a fight scene. Filming for the third season, announced as part of the Season 3 renewal, was scheduled to begin in December 2023. Filming for the fourth season is planned to begin in summer 2025.

Willa Fitzgerald, who plays Reacher's love interest in the first season, agreed to appear nude in the sex scene in episode four. It was her first nude scene on screen. However, Serinda Swan, who plays his love interest in the second season, declined to appear nude in the love scene in episode two. Swan has not appeared nude on screen since that season.

Remarkably, for a production of this size and scale, show-runner Nick Santora never once met either star Alan Ritchson or Reacher book series writer Lee Child in person. The entire process of designing the show, writing, auditioning, etc was done by him over Zoom. At the time of the first season's release on Amazon Prime streaming, he still hadn't met them in person.

However, the series does contain a reference to *One Shot*. In Season 2, while Reacher and his team try to discover who is attempting to kill the 110th Military Police Unit, Reacher's Army unit, O'Donnell suggests James Barr as a suspect. Barr is a former Army veteran wrongly accused of a mass shooting that Reacher solves in *One Shot* and the Tom Cruise film. In Season 4, the first and last line of dialogue in the season is 'whiz wit.' This is a way of ordering a cheesesteak with Cheez Whiz and onions in Philadelphia ('wit' means 'with'). Since most of the season takes place in Philadelphia, it was a nod to local Philadelphia slang and culture.

In Season Two when Reacher and his team are trying to figure out who is trying to kill off the 110th Division (Reacher's Army Unit), O'Donnell suggests James Barr as a possible suspect.
