Normally on film and TV sets, when an actor signs a nudity waiver as part of their contract, they cannot back out on the day of the scene if they suddenly become uncomfortable. For this series, the producers honored the actors' feelings if they changed their minds on the day they were required to do nudity, even if they had previously signed a nudity waiver. Actor/producer Maggie Gyllenhaal compared this to sexual consent in a Vanity Fair video, explaining: "If you go out to dinner with someone and you think, 'Yes, I want to sleep with them,' you go back to their apartment and you say, 'Actually, no,' then it's actually no. The same applies on our set."

Nine of the series' 12 directors were women, an unusually high proportion for the industry. They directed 15 of the 25 episodes: Roxann Dawson (3 episodes), Uta Briesewitz (2), Michelle MacLaren (2), Tanya Hamilton (2), Susanna White (2), Tricia Brock (1), Zetna Fuentes (1), Steph Green (1) and Minkie Spiro (1). This is consistent with the series' feminist agenda.

In the 2019 segment of the final episode, all the characters Vincent (James Franco) sees or encounters are "ghosts," characters who died during or after the series. The only character besides Vincent who is alive was Abby (Margarita Levieva), who literally appears in the final shot on the telephone.
