   A sequel to Alan Wake (2010) was planned shortly after its release but was cancelled, and its story was reworked into Quantum Break (2016). After the release of Control (2019), however, Remedy chose to develop an Alan Wake sequel once more, placing it in the same universe as Control.

   Detective Alex Casey (portrayed by Sam Lake and voiced by James McCaffrey) closely resembles Max Payne, another Remedy video game character. However, because the Max Payne IP belongs to Rockstar Games, Remedy could not use the name in the game. Rockstar purchased the ownership and distribution rights to the Max Payne series from Remedy Entertainment in 2003.

    Doctor Casper Darling, who disappeared during the events of Control (2019), appears in a video titled 'Signals' played on a TV in room 205 of the Oceanview. In the film, Darling develops theories about where and when he is while trying to control the broadcast signal. He then produces a makeshift receiver made from a coat hanger and a radio. After further effort, a signal is received: a narration by Alan. Darling says the voice sounds very much like his own before ending the broadcast, looking troubled.
