The next best is the late Dilip Kumar, whose 19 Best Actor nominations spanned 5 separate but consecutive decades (the 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s) before he finally retired in 1997. Bachchan is also the only actor who remained a bona fide film star throughout all the decades mentioned, even during the 90s, when he was partly on leave and bankrupt.
