After Daddio (2000) was cancelled, Michael Chiklis's wife Michelle suggested he lose weight and radically change his image, a change that required a different look and an entirely new acting role, one they might have to create themselves if necessary. Chiklis shaved his head, lost more than 40 pounds and began an intense exercise program, and he and his wife then set about writing a "rogue cop" film role for him. When Chiklis read the pilot script for The Shield (2002), initially known as "Rampart", he was thrilled to see how closely it resembled the role they had written and decided to take part in the project.
